14k Top Cane The Harvard Porcellian Club 1922 Inscribed to “Lewis”: 14k gold topped walking cane or long swagger stick, inscribed: “To Lewis from the Porcellian Club on the fiftieth wedding anniversary of his wedding day October 11th 1922”. The top of the cane bears the club symbol, a boars head. 14k mark on the side of gold top.
A few tiny dents, some scratches in gold top, as seen. Small gouge in wood on side of tip, as seen.
Inscription MAY be to George Washington Lewis, known as “Lewis of the Porcellian”. George served as Steward of the club for 45 years and was a beloved fixture. So beloved that a painting of him hung in the clubhouse (Joseph DeCamp 1919). Lewis passed away in 1929. The Porcellian Club was founded at Harvard University in 1791. Some of its famous members were Theodore Roosevelt and Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., his son the Supreme Court justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., among others.
NOTE: There is no provenance or proof that cane belonged to or is inscribed to George Washington Lewis.
Cane measures 36” long. Gold top is 1 3/8” across the top x 1 ¼” tall.
