Cirkut (Panoramic or Yardlong) Black and White Print: This print is 8 x 39". This is a group shot of Howell High School students, taken by T.F. Mock of Battle Creek, MI. in 1921, using a Cirkut camera. Note this is a Runaround. The Cirkut camera, made by the Folmer Graflex Corp. and sold by the Eastman Kodak Co. first offered in 1898, can take shots of large groups without distortion of the sizes of the people because they are arranged in a semi-circle around the camera as the camera rotates on its tripod. (Buildings behind them, if built in a line, will appear distorted, bent backwards at the ends). This is different from a wide angle shot where people in the center look larger than those farther from the camera and nearer the ends. Cirkut shots were usually taken of military, church, school, organization or company groups. The rotation of the camera takes some time, so if the photographer and the clients have a sense of humor, someone from the end can change positions and be in the shot twice, or even three times, at the other end and also even in the middle. These photos are called runarounds and are the most sought after among Cirkut print collectors. Note: one of the few existing Cirkut cameras Cirkut No. 10 is being offered for sale in this auction.
