Royal Vienna Hand Painted Portrait Plaque "Die Drei Parzen" The Three Fates Signed Bernard: A stunning circa 1870's Royal Vienna painted plaque of Schumann's famous Die Drei Parzen or the Three Fates. As the story goes, even the great God Zeus was afraid of the fates. The Fates: Clotho (the Spinner), Lachesis (the Apportioner), and Atropos (the Inflexible) were birth spirits who visited each newborn child and determined what his portion in life would be. Clotho, the youngest, spun the thread of life, in which the bright and dark lines were intermingled. Lachesis, the second, twisted it, and under her fingers, it was alternately strong then weak. Atropos, the third sister, armed with a huge pair of shears, cut the thread of life. “They also knew, but seldom revealed, what would be the fate of each Olympian god." Plaque measures 12.5" x 9.25, and surrounded by a great Rococo gilt frame. Back of tile is marked and signed. Framed piece measures 18.5 x 15. Plaque signed lower right by Bernard. Exquisite work.
