Vintage 1903 Magic #2 Studio Camera Stand By James H. Smith Co.: For the enthusiastic collector of large studio camera stands. Your Holy Grail of stands is probably the sought after Magic 32, made by the James H. Smith Co., of Chicago. The first model was patented in 1884, but the 1903 model, made of ash, had all the latest improvements, with a nicely finished look, wanted now by the most discriminating collectors. Well, look no further than this lot. After 120 years, we updated its wheels and replaced the felt cover on the platform. Most of the camera stands at the turn of the century used a crank to engage a brass gear in a metal track to raise the platform, along with the 11x14 studio view camera, but not the Magic #2 stand. The #2 uses a 2" wide canvas belt with the windless and pulley system of elevation to raise it to the photographers selected height. Coil springs bear the greater part of the weight, so that the elevation of the camera is accomplished with ease. There is also a slot to rest a plate or film holder. This lot requires third party shipping.
